    Thank you so much for sharing this. I owned a horse with an SI injury awhile ago, and just learned that it probably wasn't treated correctly. He was injured at age 5, and it bothered him off and on until age 20 when he passed. In rural areas this info isn't always available. So so helpful to watch.

    Hi I found this really helpful. I seem to attract horses with feet issues. I now have a 23YO mare. Exracer/ Broodmare plus very neglected when I got her 5 years ago. I have like most ignorant horse owner allowed my farrier to do his job with out judgment from me. However, my farrier had a really bad accident and do I had to find a new one. This guy is young really keen and pointed out her low heels which I knew about buy thought I was getting the best shoeing for her. I felt there was an issue but didnt make the connection between her heels getting lower and her struggling when holding her hinds up and has gotten worse. However, he pointed out how her hind angle has and can effect discomfort all through her body along her spine. I had a suspician there was something going on but couldn't make the connection. So that seems very possible. I have to say in my defence that I haven't been able to ride for 15months due to a hip replacement and a 2nd due soon. So Ellie is just grazing. George (Farrier) has advised taking her hinds of and allowing the heels to grow. Would you agree with that. He also insist on a 5 week trimming cycle. I reckon its going to be another 6/7 months before I can work her again. I am just praying she will be able to cope with some light hacking when I recover. What would your comments be. Regards Janet. 10:23

    Thank you Dr. Erica! I have an older gelding that my barn manager thinks may have EPM, however I think that it is more just that the horses is unfit as his coordination has and does improve with regular rehab type work alongside things like equitape and supportive therapies like bodywork. For some of these tests, such as the crossing of legs in a turn or a reluctance to back up can "failing" that test simply be a lack of strength/training if they are relatively equal on both sides? He has improved when Ive worked with him on it to build up his core and overall conditioning.

    • @SpringhillEquineVet
      @SpringhillEquineVet 5 дней назад

      "Failing" some of these can be an indication of muscle loss, and improving strength leading to improving test results will cause me to lean that direction. However, I also try to figure out why there was muscle loss. For many of these older horses there is more than one component to their issues.

    How far back can the cantel/panels sit on a horses spine before it causes problems?

    • @SpringhillEquineVet
      @SpringhillEquineVet 17 дней назад

      It depends. I realize that isn't a great answer, but it very much depends on the saddle. Western saddles can go all the way back to the lumbar vertebrae with no issues. An English saddle that fits poorly will cause issues if it's over the last few ribs. This is why it depends. Saddle fit and type is a very important component to the answer and varies wildly.

    I have a horse in Florida now, trying to diagnose if it’s Cushing’s…..have read (and you said here too) that time of year effects the test results….,could you please elaborate Soring Hill Vet Thanks!

    • @SpringhillEquineVet
      @SpringhillEquineVet 5 дней назад

      Fall (August 15th to December 15th in the Northern Hemisphere) has higher than normal values for ACTH testing. We also find that horses who are borderline positive during the rest of the year will be VERY positive during Fall. This makes Fall a good time of year to test as long as you understand interpretation of the results. We consider around 100 to be the high end of normal for Fall testing, whereas we consider 30 the high end of normal the rest of the year.

    • @SpringhillEquineVet
      @SpringhillEquineVet 19 дней назад

      Hi Diana! As a general rule, we never tie in the trailer. Two reasons: 1, if there's a trailer accident and the horse is tied, it can be nearly impossible to get them out of the trailer, especially if the trailer is flipped over. We've seen this end in death for horses who weren't severely injured in the accident, but couldn't be removed fast enough. 2, horses need to be able to lower their heads to sneeze or cough and clear their airways of dust. If they're tied, that can be difficult for them to do, which can contribute to breathing problems.

    Thank you for this video! I just bought a 2 horse gooseneck slant trailer which I could make into a box stall if taking the divider out. I would like to think that this would offer a more comfortable ride for my horse but I am also wondering if it's just safer to keep him in the front with the divider closed in. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this :)

      We haul nearly everything untied in a box stall these days. You have to be mindful of that when stopping or turning, but overall it's the most comfortable for the horse.

    Well if we all had million-dollar trailers like that it probably wouldn't be a problem but I have a 2 horse trailer and a horse with an injured stifle could you help me with that issue? I am trying to get him to the vet across the river bed from me but I don't want him to rip his stifle more getting in and out of a step upload type trailer loading a horse in a trailer like this is a piece of cake we need more realistic situations like two horse straight loads with a step up that would be helpful thank you in advance

    • @SpringhillEquineVet
      @SpringhillEquineVet Месяц назад

      Hi Lisa. There are several used trailer options with ramps for under a million dollars. You can also generally hire someone with a ramped trailer to haul your injured horse to the vet. Your veterinarian can likely recommend someone local who would do it for a very reasonable price. The key to success is changing your mindset from being a victim of circumstance to becoming a person who finds solutions to the problem. A trailer payment is often less money per month than the unnecessary supplements many people feed their horses. Other people make their trailer payment by hauling other people's horses to the vet a few times a month.

      I have not found it to burn on even the feet that bleed when you touch them. It sure seems like it should, but it doesn't. It also very quickly dries everything up and gets it less gooey.

    Thank you so much for this at 12:29 (and before when you sped up the small circles) what if the horse doesn't lift their front feet, but instead twists them and rotates over them (only moving the hind) until they get so bunched up they move the outside front but never stop spinning over the inside front. My mare just had this exam today and had this issue.

    at what heat could the manure catch on fire and how deep would the pile be - thats my biggest fear - im a newbie i need to start composting for my garden and adding ground to my property - i have the horses so i am trying to use what i have to save some money and have better land - the fire part scares me - i dont even have electric in my barn because i am worried a risk of hurting my animals - also i do have chickens - do you add any other typoe of manure into your pile or just horse?

    • @SpringhillEquineVet
      @SpringhillEquineVet Месяц назад

      You can add any manure. There's not really a fire risk with compost, because you are maintaining pretty high moisture content. It would have to be really dry to catch on fire, but if it was that dry, it wouldn't be composting, and therefore wouldn't be creating heat.
